Mediterranean food is best understood as a shared cooking tradition from countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea—uniting fresh vegetables, olive oil, herbs, grains, seafood, and simple techniques that highlight natural flavors.

What Mediterranean Food Is

Mediterranean cuisine refers to the traditional foods of regions including Greece, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia, and others. Despite cultural differences, these cuisines share core elements:

  • Olive oil as the primary fat

  • Vegetables, legumes, and whole grains as the foundation

  • Seafood and poultry in moderate amounts

  • Herbs and spices (oregano, basil, cumin, coriander, mint)

  • Simple cooking methods like grilling, roasting, and slow-cooking

Signature Ingredients

  • Tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, cucumbers

  • Olives & olive oil

  • Chickpeas, lentils, beans

  • Fresh herbs (parsley, dill, mint)

  • Citrus (lemon is essential)

  • Seafood (sardines, anchovies, octopus)

Why it Matters

Mediterranean cuisine is celebrated not only for flavor but also for its health benefits, thanks to its emphasis on plant-based foods, healthy fats, and balanced proteins. This style of eating has influenced the well-known Mediterranean diet, associated with heart health and longevity.
