Minhwa was originally created by royal court painters for use in palaces before being adopted by anonymous folk artists and shared with the general public. These works were used to convey messages, ward off evil spirits, and express wishes for good fortune. Most Minhwa artists were unknown individuals from the lower and middle classes, including traveling artists who often participated in festivals. Influenced by trends in fine art, they developed a distinctive, expressive style characterized by symbolism, optimism, humor, and satire. Minhwa paintings were also created to mark important life events, and both commoners and nobles commissioned these meaningful works.
